BWHC is staffed by two certified nurse-midwives who are educated in the two professions of nursing and midwifery. They are registered nurses with advanced education who must pass a national certification exam. They provide prenatal care, childbirth, and postpartum care as well as family planning and gynecological care. A registered nurse is on call to assist with births and postpartum care.

Angel Schmutz
CNM, MSN, APRN, Director
Is a 2003 graduate of KU Medical Center in Kansas City, KS with a master’s degree in nurse-midwifery. Angel has been a CNM here at the birth center since it was built in 2004, including developing policies and procedures before it opened. She attended the very first birth center birth in December 2004 and has been the Director since 2020. Prior to finishing graduate school she had 6 years of experience as a hospital labor and delivery nurse. Angel is the mother of 5 children. She is married to Reverend Rob Schmutz, a Nazarene Evangelist. Angel and Rob have built their home in the Yoder, KS area.
Chelsea Gleason
MSN, APRN, CNM
Chelsea Gleason is a Certified Nurse Midwife dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based care for women and families. She earned her Associate Degree in Nursing from Dodge City Community College in 2009, her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Chamberlain University in 2018, and her Master of Science in Nurse Midwifery from Frontier Nursing University in 2021.
With experience in both home birth and hospital settings, Chelsea has built her career around supporting women through pregnancy, birth, and beyond. She previously founded and operated Choice Midwifery in Dodge City, Kansas, where she provided full-scope midwifery services, including home birth, fertility care, and ultrasound. Her advanced training includes first assist in cesarean section, limited obstetric ultrasound, and hormone replacement therapy for perimenopausal and menopausal women.
Chelsea is passionate about helping families feel informed, respected, and empowered in their care. She believes strongly in blending modern evidence-based practice with the personalized touch that midwifery care is known for.
Outside of midwifery, Chelsea and her husband are raising their two children, who are active in 4-H and local school activities. She enjoys gardening, traveling, and being involved in her community.
Paula Yoder
Office Manager
Paula came to the Birth Center in Sept. 2009, bringing with her several years of secretarial experience as well as experience in infant, child & elder care. She also taught missionary children in east Africa for more than eight years. Paula’s interest in healthcare grew as she observed the maternity & medical care available in Eastern Africa.
Rosina Schmucker
RN
Rosina Schmucker obtained her RN license in 2005 and has worked at the Birth Center since 2007. Rosina also works at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital in the emergency room, acute care, pain clinic, and surgery clinic, and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in nursing. Rosina enjoys riding her horse, beekeeping, doing things with her five children, and going on backpacking trips with her husband, Will.
Sonday McGinnis
RN
After completing her registered nursing program, Sonday began a new graduate program for labor and delivery in 2012 at Providence St Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California. She continued there until 2017 when her family decided to move to Newton, KS. She and her husband, who is a Presbyterian pastor, have 3 children.
Sarah Walker, RN IBCLC
RN, IBCLC
Sarah joined the Yoder Birth Center Team in June 2023. She received her RN license in 2012 and worked as a nurse in a few other roles before discovering her true passion—helping moms recover and breastfeed their babies! She cares deeply about the postpartum stage of a woman’s journey, and feels blessed with the opportunity to support hundreds of mothers and babies! In 2019 she became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Sarah and her Husband John have been married for 15 years. Her passion for supporting breastfeeding stems from her own journey of feeding all four of their children for 2+ years each. She believes breastfeeding is God’s good gift to mothers after the hard work of pregnancy and delivery! Sarah’s fourth baby was born at the birthing center in 2020, and she is thrilled to now care for other women during this special time of their lives.
Ariel Furgason, LPN
LPN, IV Certified
Ariel, graduated from Hutchinson Community College in 2018. Passionate about labor and delivery since childhood, she is known for her approachable and supportive care. Ariel lives near Buhler with her husband and two children.
Paige Nisly
RN
Paige graduated with her BSN from Pittsburg State University in 2023 and has previously worked in the hospital setting as a labor and delivery nurse and now currently works in ambulatory surgery. Paige has a strong passion for physiologic birth and enjoys going to the lake with family in spare time. Paige and her husband Jeremy live in McPherson, KS and are expecting their first baby in 2026!
Esther Borntrager
Receptionist
Esther was born and raised in Garnett, Kansas, and move to Yoder, Kansas to teach for the Amish school. She taught there for two years, and then served in Ireland for the next two years. She has recently moved back to Yoder and has joined the birth center staff as a receptionist.
